My favourite famous couples

As a rule, I kind of ignore Valentine’s Day. I’m not against it, I just don’t really care for it. I can’t say honestly that I wouldn’t enjoy it a bit more if I had someone to buy me presents, but I don’t. In the past, on the blog, I’ve acknowledged Valentine’s Day by sharing my five favourite celebrity men, but this year, I’ve decided to share some of my favourite celebrity couples.

I adore Barack Obama. Regardless of his politics or his record in office, I just think he’s fabulous. And I love his relationship with Michelle, from where I’m sitting, it looks like a very happy marriage, and I think she’s the perfect type of first lady; a very strong and capable woman who stands by the president’s side and supports him. When I was searching for an image to use here, I came across a ludicrous story about Barack having an affair with Beyoncé. If there’s an ounce of truth in it, I’ll eat my shoe.

Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir

Proof that you don’t need to get married to commit your lives to one another, Sartre and de Beauvoir signed a ‘two-year lease’ in 1929, and remained together until his death in 1980.

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka

If you follow Neil Patrick Harris on Twitter or Instagram, you’ll know that these two have the loveliest little family. I have the utmost respect for Neil Patrick Harris, because he’s an openly gay man in Hollywood, and they are very, very hard to come by.

Richard and Pat Nixon

Oh look, it’s another president! Say what you will about the man (and there’s an awful lot to be said), but the Nixons’ story is a romantic one. They met at an amateur dramatic society, and Nixon described it as love at first sight. He allegedly proposed on their first date, but she dated him for two years before finally agreeing. They were married for 53 years, until her death in 1993.

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard

Clark Gable was married five times, which probably makes him seem like a bit of an old cad, but his third wife Carole Lombard, died after just three years of marriage. She was killed, along with her mother, and Gable’s best man, in a plane crash. When he died himself, he was buried alongside her, which I just find terribly sad and poignant.

There are loads more, but frankly I am running out of time to write this post, and my hands are so cold that typing is becoming a problem. Five seemed like a good place to stop, but maybe I’ll make this into a series!
