My Thoughts On… The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Synopsis

Charlie, an introverted teenager, is starting high school, and is taken under the wing of a two students.

What I Liked

• I read the book what feels like an age ago, at the end of 2011. I have been waiting to see the film ever since, and I was annoyed that I missed it at the cinema! So I was really pleased to finally watch, and I was really impressed with it as an adaptation of a really good book. It didn’t take too many liberties, and yet neither did it stick rigidly to the events in the book.
• The main performances were all very strong, Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller, in particular. It’s safe to say that Emma Watson has left behind Hermione Granger with her portrayal of Sam.
• The supporting performances were also enjoyable; Paul Rudd, Mae Whitman (who I adore), Dylan McDermott and Joan Cusack were all particularly enjoyable.
• Dylan McDermott is very attractive.

What I Didn’t Like

• A bit nit-picky maybe, but the scene in which the doctor tells Charlie’s parents about his aunt’s abuse takes place in the corridor of the hospital. This would literally never happen.
• The trio hear a song on the radio that becomes known as the ‘tunnel song’, because they don’t know what it is called. It seems a tad unlikely that none of them, bearing in mind how into music they are, would recognise that it was a Bowie song, even if they didn’t know the name. I know that in this day and age, all you have to do is hear a line of a song and you can Google it (or even use an app to identify it straightaway). But I really do feel that they should have been able to recognise Bowie’s voice.
• There was not enough Kate Walsh or Nina Dobrev, both of whom I like (for differing reasons).
