My Thoughts On… Scrooged

Just a quick reminder that My Thoughts On… posts may contain spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the film in question, it may be best to move on!

A cynically selfish TV executive gets haunted by three spirits bearing lessons on Christmas Eve. (via IMDb)

What I Liked

  • I’m not a big fan of comedies (hence why I’m trying to branch out and actually watch some as part of my 32 Before 32 list), because so often I just don’t find them funny. But I did laugh out loud a couple of times at Scrooged. Most of that is down to Bill Murray; the character of Frank Cross (Ebenezer Scrooge) allows him to be his archetypal grumpy, cynical, dry self.
  • There’s a reason why the story of A Christmas Carol has been done, and done, and done some more. It just kind of works. It’s the perfect tale of redemption, and it’s festive too!
  • It’s not a very long film, which, when you’ve recently sat through the likes of Catching Fire and The Hobbit, you come to realise makes a refreshing change.
  • Since I watched this film last week, I’ve found myself singing Put a Little Love in Your Heart a lot, and that’s no bad thing

What I Didn’t Like

  • The Ghost of Christmas Past is disgusting to look at, and the Ghost of Christmas Present is very irritating!
  • As much as I love a happy ending, the ending of this film did get a bit silly, and went on for ages and ages! I know Scrooge (or Frank, in this case), has to have his moment of redemption, but it just seems to be a bit ridiculous here! Not least because it’s tough to buy Bill Murray as a cheerful, happy-go-lucky fellow!

This is a bit of a vague post, simply because, although I enjoyed Scrooged a lot more than I expected to, I didn’t come away from it with any strong feelings. It was good, but it wasn’t spectacular. I own it on DVD, so I’m sure I’ll watch it again in the lead up to Christmas in the future, but it’s not going to become one of my essential Christmas films!
