My Thoughts On… Broadcast News

Just a quick reminder that My Thoughts On… posts may contain spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the film in question, please skip down to the section titled Why Should You See This Film? where you will find no spoilers!

Take two rival TV reporters: one handsome, one talented, both male. Add one producer, female. Mix well and watch the sparks fly. (via IMDb)

What I Liked

  • It feels as though everyone is talking about Broadcast News at the moment. I say everyone, what I mean is that the Fug Girls mentioned it on a photo of Holly Hunter at the SAG Awards, and Mark Kermode mentioned it on an episode of Wittertainment from about three years ago that I only listened to recently. Anyway, the long and short of it is that I didn’t really know anything about it until I watched it, and now I feel like it’s everywhere. Anyway, everyone is very complimentary about it, and I totally agree, I actually really loved it.
  • The main reason for loving Broadcast News is Holly Hunter. She is perfect as Jane, the very accomplished news producer who is caught between the charismatic Tom (played by William Hurt), and the neurotic Aaron (played by Albert Brooks). She’s brilliant at her job, but she’s a bit useless when it comes to men, and Holly Hunter just plays her brilliantly.
  • Talking of Jane, some of the clothes she wears are just awesome. Especially the dress she wears to the Correspondents’ Dinner. It’s so eighties, but I think it would totally work now! I loved her clothes so much I started a Film Fashion board on Pinterest!
  • I really enjoyed the scene in which Jane and Tom had to quickly put together a broadcast about an emerging news story, leaving Aaron out in the cold. I particularly enjoyed Aaron sitting at home feeling bitter about being left out, but not being able to help himself from calling the station and offering advice. I loved his line “A lot of alliteration for anxious anchors placed in powerful posts!”
  • There’s also a scene in which Joan Cusack (who is, of course, ace) flies through the station at breakneck speed trying to get a tape to where it needs to be before time runs out. It’s genuinely funny, and I loved it!

What I Didn’t Like

  • There wasn’t a lot I didn’t like about Broadcast News, but I felt as though maybe the epilogue is slightly unnecessary.

Why Should You See This Film

I would recommend this film to just about anyone; it’s on the AFI 100 Years… 100 Laughs list, so I watched it because I’m trying to watch twelve films from the list as part of my 32 Before 32 list. I really liked that it wasn’t broad comedy, it was funny in places, but it was the drama that I really liked, as well as Holly Hunter’s character Jane. It’s a real eighties film, and it is really is a joy to watch.
